Birmingham Firefighters Association - Local 117 The Association was organized on September 3rd, 1918 by seven far sighted firefighters, J. A. Browning, S. G. Crows, R. B. Knox, E. E. Harris, S. W. Jones, E. F. Roddy and W. M. Bondurant. In that year, there were 20 stations and 220 men. The firefighters worked 9 consecutive 24 hour shifts (216 hours), then they got 24 hours off and received $70 per month. The next year, hours were reduced and the two platoon system was introduced. This was accomplished by legislation introduced by Local 117. In 1935 the local worked towards final passage of the Civil Service Laws that we now enjoy. In 1939, pension legislation passed setting up the present pension system; again only with the efforts of firefighters organizing both active and retired city employees. From then until now, Local 117 has worked hard on some of the major and many minor issues. Things we take for granted, such as modern turn-out gear, uniforms and jackets, extraordinary disability benefits, cancer presumption legislation, holiday time, 25 year pension, heart and lung bill, paid life insurance, medical insurance, educational, incentives, state and national, Killed in Line of Duty benefits (KID), scholarship funds, longevity pay, maximum pension benefits from $125 per month to 60% then to 67 1/2 % and now 75% final average salary (FAS), and a surviving spouse receives 60% of a retirees FAS up from 45%, and many other benefits. The Local represents the firefighters each year in bargaining with the city government for salary increases and other benefits, represents members in grievance hearings and determination herrings, represents or causes representation when legal counsel is necessary, at no cost to the member. Each is also enrolled in the most comprehensive exposure reporting program in the Southeast. Local 117 has a proud past and a bright future. It will continue to serve, defend, and stand strong in support of Birmingham Firefighters and the issues its members believe in. Marshall Page, President, BRFFA |
